now that iphone 4 has been launched in US, and in some European countries, with lots a lot more to follow in July and August. What everyone is undoubtedly waiting for is to jailbreak and unlock the iphone 4. considering that iphone 4 comes unlocked in nearly all countries except for United States, what everyone really wants is a jailbreak, which needs a new exploit as Apple has already patched all the holes in the most recent firmware release, including the one used by Spirit.
iPhone 4 Jailbreak
There has been lots of discussions on this in the community. Some are saying that jailbreak could be out as early as this weekend, some are pointing for a July release. Geohot was in France this week for “Nuit Du Hack” conference where he talked about a new exploit called “pwned4life” which can jailbreak and unlock all iPhones for life. While he absolutely has exploits which can jailbreak or unlock iphone 4, and iphone 3GS (new bootrom), iPod touch 2G (MC models), iPod touch 3G, but the problem is that he doesn’t have any plans to release them soon. According to his recent tweet:
In Berlin where there are no Apple stores. USA in world cup! No plans for new jailbreak. stop asking.
Another iphone hacker, who is behind greenpois0n declares to have a tethered exploit which he is working on. but again, no plans on when he is going to release it to public.
the bootrom exploit I and geohot have is a tethered exploit, but there’s another untethered exploit, but not in bootrom so it can be patched
The team which is probably closest in getting a jailbreak out for us is The iphone Dev Team. What I believe is that they have a new exploit, which they will release in a form of tool in the upcoming weeks.
iPhone 4 Unlock
Unlock for iphone 4 is entirely a different story altogether. iphone Dev team released ultrasn0w 0.93 this past week which can unlock all basebands, including the newest 05.13.04 on all iPhones (except iphone 4). before iphone 4 was released, it was initially believed that this version of ultrasn0w will also be able to unlock iphone 4. but now according to this report from ModMyi Forums, iphone 4 unlock will require complete rewrite of ultrasn0w software because of the new baseband OS in iphone 4.
The DevTeam and others have been checking through the iphone 4, and have noticed the baseband runs a completely different OS than on previous models. The iphone 3G and 3G[S] both ran Nucleus OS on the PMB8878 baseband CPU (aka XGold 608), where the iphone 2G ran the PMB8876 (aka S-Gold 2). iphone 4 uses the PMB9800, or X-Gold 618 – running a separate OS – ThreadX, an RTOS by ExpressLogic.
So what this indicates is that an unlock for iphone 4 wont be out anytime soon. So if you are an international user, you are good to opt for unlocked versions of iphone 4. us iphone 4 individuals will have to wait for long before they can use this device on carriers other than AT&T.
