3D SCANNER MADE IN A DAY

The LVL1 Hackerspace held a hackathon back in June as well as this is one of the jobs that was produced in that 24-hour period. It’s a 3D scanner made of leftover parts. The picture provides you an concept of the math utilized in the picture processing. It shows the angular relations between the laser diode, the subject being scanned, as well as the webcam doing the scanning.

The webcam is of rather low high quality as well as one method to quickly enhance the output would be to replace it with a much better one. however since the rules stated they had to utilize only materials from the parts bin it worked out just fine. The other problem that came into play was the there were no LCD screens offered for utilize in the project. since of that they decided to make the gadget controllable over the network. On the right you can see a power supply taped to the top of a cars and truck computer. It links to the laser (pulled out of a barcode scanner which creates a line of red light) as well as the turntable. A Python script does all of the picture processing, assembling each slice of the scan into both an animated GIF as well as an OBJ file.
